The London police chief announced statistics showing the decline of homophobic hate crimes at a news conference Thursday, the International Day Against Homophobia.
From 2008-11, incidents of hate crimes overall declined to 25 from 44. Hate crimes against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and two-spirited community declined to four from 13.
Police credit the decrease in numbers to improved education and prevention. They’ve been working with the Homophobia-Biphobia-Transphobia Working Group to create anti-homophobia curriculum as well as a new website (hbtlondon.ca).
